During this event, Nina Cramer and Mai Takawira will present their publication black monument and discuss Master Narratives, Sweden’s first anti-racist monument. The presentation will be followed by a conversation between artist Santiago Mostyn and curator Tawanda Appiah, unpacking the work’s standing in Malmö and reflecting on its dual responsibility to the past, present and future.

Master Narratives was inaugurated to a staggering audience on 11 October 2026 at Jesusparken. The public sculpture, created by Susanna Marcus Jablonski and Santiago Mostyn, was the result of a citizens’ initiative highlighting the lack of public reckoning with the racist motives behind the deadly attacks in Malmö between 2003 and 2010.

The anthology black monument was published in spring 2026. It explores ways in which artists disrupt colonial monumentality. Centering metamonumental practices (critical, sometimes speculative, and often ephemeral practices), it refuses linear chronology and other Eurocentric frameworks.

black monument features contributions by Justin F. Kennedy, Olivier Marboeuf, Jeannette Ehlers, patricia kaersenhout, and Abdul Dube alongside art historian Amelia Groom, scholars Lena Sawyer and Nana Osei-Kofi, and curator Tawanda Appiah. It was edited by G/HOSTING (Mai Takawira and Nina Cramer) and published by Art Hub and Archive Books.

Santiago Mostyn (b. Turtle Island) is an artist working within film, installation and performance. Mostyn grew up in Zimbabwe and Trinidad, lives in Sweden, and was the 2024-25 Logie Fellow at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute.

G/HOSTING is a Copenhagen-based platform, organized by Mai Takawira and Nina Cramer, that uses curatorial, editorial, educational, and dissemination projects to activate critical and reparative approaches to ongoing colonial histories. Through collaborations with artists, writers, and cultural institutions, G/HOSTING facilitates interventions into exhibitions, collections, public spaces, and academic discourses by foregrounding perspectives from the global majority.

This event is organised by Skånes konstförening in collaboration with Malmö konst.
