On Friday, November 6, Skånes konstförening presents an album launch and concert celebrating the release of Shelf Life, the new musical album by artist Matilda Tjäder. Released on October 21 with Doyenne, the album will be performed live by Tjäder together with collaborators Angelina Petrovic and Niklas Tjäder.
The musical release is based on Tjäder’s eponymous short story Shelf Life, originally written for an exhibition in 2024. The story was later adapted for the stage as Shelf Life: An Opera, created in collaboration with Mathias Tang, Penny Yiou Peng and Thibaut Knapp, premiered at Inkonst, Malmö, on September 26, 2025 and produced by Malmö-based Scaling.
The album follows a character who collects objects that share the same expiration date. As this date approaches, the inevitability of an ending begins to emerge. Through repetition, obsession and satire, everyday protocols are transformed into a dreamlike landscape where memory and surveillance take centre stage.
The term “Shelf life” is a designation used to determine the function and value of a commodity, and to establish whether it is fit to sell or consume. But what happens once an object crosses that threshold.
Working through notions of ‘expiration’ in a surrealist and associative manner, the album explores the invisible infrastructures and systems of surveillance embedded in everyday life.
The CD edition of the album will be available for purchase at the event.
The album will be released by Doyenne on October 21:
