In her new video installation\u00a0<em>The\u00a0group that cannot sing<\/em>, she explores the relationship between documentary and staged images,\u00a0the strangeness of ordinariness, and the fear of failure.\u00a0<em>The group that cannot sing<\/em>\u00a0is a popular singing course at Kalliola, a community college in Helsinki, which invites its participants to get to know their voice and discover the joy of singing. Laura participated in the group\u2019s activities for one year, as an unskilled singer among others. It has been a way to deal with her own perfectionism as well as a chance to research different understandings of failure in our culture. With a background in documentary photography, it has also been important for her to rethink the ethics and power relations of portraiture and try to find a gaze that is both tender and direct. The piece is made in collaboration with sound designer Niklas Nybom.<br \/><br \/><strong>Laura B\u00f6\u00f6k<\/strong> (b. 1986) lives in Helsinki and works with photography, moving image and text. In her earlier works she has explored themes around identity, place and personal and collective memory. In 2020, she is graduating with a master\u2019s degree in photography from Aalto University in Helsinki, where she has also studied documentary film. In 2014, she completed her BA in Documentary Photography from the University of South Wales.
