But something forces you to anyway.\u201d These are the words of James Baldwin, published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Paris Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in spring 1984. Baldwin\u2019s articulation positions writing as an ongoing practice of self-confrontation: the uncovering of uncomfortable truths and the rupture of illusion, both personal and political.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this event, we commune with his language<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enunciating it, ruminating on it, and foraying into its afterlives. The evening opens with readings by Malm\u00f6-based poet and playwright Felicia Mulinari, and curator Tawanda Appiah, before unfolding into a performance, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling Light Suite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by Berlin-based poet and artist Logan February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling Light Suite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a trio of poems (<em>Traveling Light<\/em>, <em>A Lover&#8217;s Question<\/em>, <em>Death is Easy<\/em>) on the liminality of exile, recording an immaterial experience of voyage across borders of nation and nature, space and time, life and death. The suite responds, in part, to the poetics of James Baldwin and the works of Ethiopian composer Emahoy Tsegu\u00e9-Maryam Gu\u00e8brou\u2014a descendant of their questioning of the soul&#8217;s costly and courageous quest in foreign lands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This event takes place in dialogue with our current exhibition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/skaneskonst.se\/en\/reading-james-baldwin\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading James Baldwin<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, curated by Tawanda Appiah, on view until 25 January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bios:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logan February is a Nigerian poet and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores desire, psychospirituality, and Afro-queer identity. Their poetry collections include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In The Nude<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ouida Poetry, 2019) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Voodoo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Poesie Dekolonie\/Engeler Verlag, 2024). Their short film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was an official selection at the 2025 ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival. February received the Future Awards Africa Prize for Literature and recent fellowships from the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program and Akademie der K\u00fcnste, among others. Presently a poet-in-residence at the Humboldt Forum, Logan February lives in Berlin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Felicia Mulinari is an author who lives in Malm\u00f6. She made her debut in 2019 with the critically acclaimed poetry suite <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Det som inte kan utpl\u00e5nas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (That Which Cannot Be Erased).
