Skånes konstförening is seeking a curator of 40% for a two year period

Duration: two-year fixed-term employment, 40% position

January 1st 2018 at the latest, or after agreement.

Full-time monthly salary is 26 250 kr

The curator directs the delivery of Skånes konstförening’s artistic vision over the course of a two-year period. The curator will initiate, research, develop and implement the artistic and exhibition programme with a clear curatorial vision. Skånes konstförening focuses on art from the region, with an emphasis on local discourse, practice and context the proposed programme should reflect this. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong desire to engage with art: to be in conversation with artists, artworks, artistic practice and discourse. Required is also to be able to contextualize these artistic investigations with care; presenting an intellectual and artistic framework in dialogue with contemporary art, broader fields and disciplines such as (politics, ecology, economics, theatre, etc), actively engaging the public with insight and generosity.

Curatorial Direction/Vision:
The applicant should present a proposal (max. 3 pages) of the artistic programme for the next two years at Skånes konstförening. This programme should outline and articulate your curatorial vision. It should include some concrete proposals for possible exhibitions. In addition to proposals for the artistic programme, the applicant should also describe how the curatorial framework will operate on the terms of the curatorial framework. The programme should be conceived in relation to Skånes konstförening, as the applicant experiences the association now, and as envisioned in the future.

The curator has the overall responsibility for exhibitions, related public events and programmes. She/he is responsible for researching, developing, overseeing and presenting the exhibition programme, as well as for planning and implementing the exhibition programme with the Coordinator, and the exhibition design and installation with the Coordinator and the Director. As far as possible the Curator should attend Skånes konstförening’s openings and events as much as possible, to give public presentations and contextualize the activities taking place at Skånes konstförening. The curator is also responsible for the development of an education programme (for example: guided tours, seminars, public events) in relation to the exhibition. They should be actively researching, keeping informed of developments in contemporary art in the region, nationally and internationally. They should also show an awareness of current theoretical discourses relevant to programme and maintain an active dialogue with artists, collaborators and partners towards exhibitions. Organizational and administrative tasks/logistics (shipping, travel, insurance, operational matters) are shared and discussed with Coordinator and Director. The position also requires the production of written material for exhibitions (exhibition texts, artist presentations, texts for website and social media), and selecting of images for communication purposes.

The position as Curator at Skåne’s konstförening requires knowledge of funding sources, experience with funding applications and developing partnerships and collaborations with other organizations. Ability to work within a budget and keep to deadlines, as well as to work independently for most of the working process is required (e.g. someone with previous experience from running independent projects or with relevant experience). To apply for the position strong communication skills are required: you will be communicating with the Board and the team at Skånes konstförening on a regular basis, at all stages of the working process, as well as to work effectively and collaborate with artists, guests, external institutions and other members of the team. The Curator should have excellent knowledge of contemporary art and be able to articulate a clear artistic vision for Skånes konstförening. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Swedish and English, plus knowledge of other languages advantageous.

Past Experience:
Education in relevant subject, e.g. arts and cultural studies or equivalent level of experience. Experience of curating and producing strong artistic programmes and exhibitions. Practical knowledge and experience of exhibition installation, production and presentation issues.
